Under the category of "hope springs eternal," I planted two tomato plants today. They have about as much chance of surviving as Ty Murray has of winning "Dancing With the Stars." But they were a gift, and I didn't feel right passing them on to someone else.
The problem is there is not a square foot anywhere on our lot where they will get enough sun to grow, blossom, and produce yummy tomatoes. There is not enough miracle in Miracle Gro to make that happen. All we have is shade, shade, and more shade.
So as to increase our chances of having home-grown tomatoes by 50 percent, I planted one plant on one shady side of the house, and the other on the other shady side. We'll see which one lasts longer.
If we ever move again, we've decided it will be to a lot with no trees. We'll be able to grow grass instead of pine straw, flowers instead of ivy, and real tomatoes instead of ferns. I'll miss the shade, but not when I'm eating that first tomato fresh from the garden!

Should be an interesting experiment; which shade will they grow best in ?
I have the opposite problem with my yard, all sun and no shade. Planted a few tomato plants a few weeks back but lost a few of them due to sun burn, so I've an experiment of my own going...what will I get first, juicy red tomatoes or sun fried green tomatoes. :)
Love the lanyard you picture in your banner/header and then farther down in your blog, it is so cheerful and bright with pretty colors.
